Many
folks think we throw seeds in the ground and up comes the specific fruit or
nut tree desired. Actually, all the fruit and nut trees we sell are budded or
grafted to a specific variety. Grafting is the art of joining parts of plants
together in such a manner that they will unite and continue their growth as
one plant. The part of the graft combination which is to become the upper portion
is termed the scion (pronounced "sign") and the part which is to become
the lower portion or root is termed the rootstock. All methods of joining plants
are properly termed grafting, but when the scion part is only a small piece
of bark containing a single bud, the operation is termed budding.
